Sarasota Opera House
The Sarasota Opera House, originally the Edwards Theatre, has an amazing history. This opera house is located at 61 North Pineapple Avenue in Sarasota, Florida. It originally opened on April 10, 1926, with a three-story entrance containing eight shops on the ground floor, 12 offices on the second floor, and 12 apartments on the third. The theatre’s auditorium contained an orchestral pipe organ In the 1920s.
The Sarasota Opera House quickly became a popular entertainment venue with major performers in the day, such as Will Rogers, Ziegfeld Follies and Elvis Presley. In 1979, the Guild bought the Edwards Theatre for $150,000. Major renovations were required to restore the house and to accommodate the demands of opera. So, the association began renovations in 1982. The beautiful renovations, showcasing the new Sarasota Opera House, appeared on the National Register of Historic Places in March of 1984.
