Look at the 2016 Toyota Rav4 and the Honda CR-V, and you will see two compact SUV crossovers that can seat five passengers in comfort. Even their base engines are similar to each other. Upon closer examination, it becomes clear that Honda and Toyota produced fairly different vehicles, with varying configurations and features.
Engines and Hybrid Models
Both the Rav4 and CR-V only offer a single engine. The CR-V has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder while the Rav4 has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. They both come with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and generate nearly identical outputs while getting basically the same fuel economy. However, the Rav4 now offers a hybrid model. This model is actually more powerful than the gas Rav4 and the CR-V with 194 net horsepower and truly impressive acceleration. The Rav4 Hybrid also gets much better fuel economy than any version of the CR-V, with 34 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. Honda still doesn’t offer a hybrid version of the CR-V, giving the Rav4 a huge lead in terms of options, power, and efficiency.
Both models have a good selection of configurations, but the Rav4 offers more thanks to its hybrid option. The Honda CR-V has five trims, each of which is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Each of the Rav4’s four trims also offers front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the two hybrid Rav4 models come standard with all-wheel drive. In other words, both the Rav4 and CR-V have 10 configurations, but the Rav4’s are less similar to each other thanks to the available hybrid powertrain.
As SUVs, both the CR-V and Rav4 are known for their versatility, but the Rav4 gives Florida drivers more cargo space. The Honda CR-V has 37.2 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row of seats or 70.9 cubes with it folded down. The Toyota Rav4 does better in both respects, with 38.4 cubic feet with the seats upright or 73.4 cubic feet when they are folded. These extra 1.2 to 2.5 cubic feet can make a big difference if you are moving, taking a road trip, or making a large purchase.
