If you want to get a seat at the 2017 World Rowing Championship that will take place from Sept. 23 through Oct. 1 at the Nathan Benderson Park, it would be a good idea to secure your tickets early. Choice seats are already being snatched up, as 40,000 spectators from 60 countries worldwide are expected to descend on Sarasota.
These are in addition to the 17,000 contestants and their coaches that will be competing in this international regatta. This event is expected to positively impact Sarasota, Bradenton, and the surrounding areas to the tune of $25 million. Most of this money will be spent in the hotels, restaurants, stores, and gas stations.
Rowing’s Return to the U.S.
This popular event will be in the United States for the first time in more than 20 years. In addition to the exciting competitions, a special ceremony on Sept. 30 will honor 19 U.S. gold medal-winning rowing crews from the past 70 years. This ceremony will take place at the end of the day’s races at around 1:15 p.m. Honors will be bestowed from both land and water, with a row-by done by 11 select boats. The 19 “Crews of Distinction” will receive their honors from both U.S. Rowing and the National Rowing Foundation. It will honor both men’s and women’s rowing teams. The ceremony also will recognize five Olympic gold medalist teams: the 2004 men’s eight, 1984 men’s double sculls, 1984 women’s eight, 1964 men’s eight, and 1956 men’s eight.
Fun Themes and Activities
Each day of the event will have a different theme. These themes include Eco-Day, Farmer’s Market, Family Fun, Military Appreciation, Tech Day, Golden Age Celebration and Community Service Day, Boating and Fishing, Local Attractions, and Health and Wellness. Choose which theme you want to attend.
Community activities that will complement the regatta include “Let’s Eat, Englewood.” This event will allow people to sample a variety of cuisines without breaking their piggy banks. Top area restaurants will offer special prices throughout the day.
Celebrate with International Visitors
A number of countries from around the world will be here to compete. Just a few of them are Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, Great Britain, Poland, and Zimbabwe. This presents a unique opportunity to mingle with people from all over the world without leaving the U.S.
You can get involved without being part of a rowing team. There are several volunteer opportunities, with 2,000 volunteers needed in various categories. There will be vendor spots available. If you are a business owner, you may wish to explore sponsor possibilities. See the World Rowing Championship website for more information.
